A day in the life at Future Publishing

Thursday 22nd January 2009

8.30am - Alarm sounds, feeling a little groggy after a few pint's in the pub last night after football. Think it might be a good idea to hit the snooze button!

8.39am - Snooze period ends, best get up! Jumps in the shower.

8.50am - Switch on TV and start to get some clothes on, quickly check computer to see if Adam and Phil have talked about anything besides snowboarding, back pains and Dignitas signing yet another sponsor. Also a quick look at the email.

9am - Make a quick cuppa and make some toast.

9.15am - Wanted Down Under starts, get to watch a few minutes of this before parting for work.

9.25am - A familys move to Aus is hampered by a stubborn 17 year old who doesnt want to leave! I wish I could see the conclusion but should probably leave for work.

9.35am (ish) - Arrive at "Future Towers" in the center of Bath. Toms train seems to be delayed, Ben is most likely still in bed (hung over Im sure because of pub last night) and Ed is currently over in the Princes Street office working on Cycling News development. Ian, Futures Art Director has left a note saying he is in Quay house for a 10am meeting. (Ian is my boss).

9.40am - Tom arrives, asking "Whats the crack?" - Tom is Polish and think thats a col thing to say!

9.45am
- Ben arrives, myself and Ben wander to the kitchen to make a cuppa, have a quick natter and comment on a thong that flashed itself to us a few seconds earlier.

9.55am - Cuppa in hand, I boot up my MacPro, plug in my iPod, start up Photoshop, Coda, Firefox & Skype. Have a quick read of SmashingMagazine.com & BBC News.

9.56am - I start up Entourage to check my Email and Calendar, appears I have a 10am with Storm (yes thats her name) about "Project Crayon". I have a few emails to siv through, a few newsletters, some Facebook spam, JIRA task assignments (our Project management software) and the latest press release from UKESA.

10.05am - Storm pokes her head over my 2 monitors and smiles, time for a catch up.

10.30am - After catching up with Project Crayon, I now know the project has been placed on hold because the stakeholders havent completed the brief I had requested yesterday.

10.45am - Open up my designs for the BikeRadar Live event, and carry on working on this as it was dropped on my yesterday with an expected 48hour turnaround - apparently after publishing in our biking mags the site launch date, they actually "forgot" to request the site to be designed and built!

11am - Phone call from Ian, reminding me I have an 11.30am with him and a few others about the T3 International style guide.

11.05am - Another cuppa me thinks! Carrying on with BRD Live designs.

11.20am - Sandwich guy arrives, pick up a pack of Wotsits!

11.27am - Wander of to Quay house for my meeting. Stopping off at Costa to grab a hot choc and some Oreos.

11.35am
- Sit down in boardroom 1 with Ian, the International Licensing Director, Digital Director & a Legal Rep. Switching on the 50" LCD to see Kieran (Editor of T3.com) and Nial (Publisher of T3) sat in one of the meeting rooms in London, live via video feed.

12.20pm - Meeting ends, seems I am going to be drawing up a intensive style guide, supplying all HTML & CSS elements as well as guidelines for brand implemntation as a package that we can send to our International Partners who wish to set up their own version of T3. I have also presented a solution for the long term that will only apply to new licensees. This will need to be turned around within 2 weeks.

12.40pm - After sitting in the Future Deli for 20 mins with Ian discussing the coming storm we decide to head back to our own office.

12.50pm - On arrival back in Westgate, Ed has popped over to grab some designs and see if we want to go out for lunch.  So we head to Wagamamas.

14.20pm - Feeling heavier than normal we head to make a cuppa.

14.30pm - Sit back down, finish off the designs for BRD Live and send them to Stuart (project manager) to send to the powers that be for sign ups.

14.50pm - Read through the meeting minutes regarding T3 and start to write down a list of all the components that will need supplying.

15.10pm - List completed and I can finally see the mission set out in front of me. This has been emailed to all parties of the meeting in order to get their input/feedback.

15.15pm - Start work on the T3 components, easiest first, header, nav, footer & newsticker all extracted and recoded to optimise.

15.45pm
- Email comes through from Nick in London to make a few minor amends to the designs of Techradar.com I am working on. Sent for approval.

15.50pm - Pop to Sainsburys to do a chocolate run! Also pop to H&M, Superdry & Currys for a quick lookie. Coe out with a new jumper, some jeans and a new scarf!

16.20pm - Changes for Techradar.com approved, and implemented into the dev site.

16.50pm - Design for BRD Live approved, dev begins.

17.10pm - Another cuppa in order. Also manage to blag a doughnut from a pack a few desks down.

17.20pm - We decide to start filming our latest youtube installment of film remakes. Today : The Shining (click to watch)

17.35pm
- Time to go home.
